Your Holiday House Cleaning Guide

Holiday Cleaning Tips

If this happens, try to get to the stain as quickly as possible. Grab a couple of light-colored towels and use one to dab the spill and use the other to blot it. Take 1 tablespoon of mild dish soap and mix it with around a cup of water. You could use vinegar as well. Soak the stain with the solution and then dab and blot until your drying towel no longer shows the stain. Windows: If your home windows are prone to fogging up during the colder months, then you can try this tip. Take a solution of one part rubbing alcohol and 3 parts water and wipe your windows down. A little glycerin can also be used. Just wipe it on the insides of the window. Alternatively, anti-freeze is also effective in preventing foggy windows. Cleaning your knickknacks: If you have your beloved collection of expensive figurines lovingly displayed on a shelf, then you already know how dusty they can get. One house cleaning tip is to simply arrange them in the sink or on a towel and mist them with window cleaner. Leave them to drip dry and they will be restored to their sheen in no time! This tip is also wonderful for China, glass or any other glazed pottery. Cleaning Up Spilled Candle Wax: This happens to all of us at one time or another. If you have wax spilled on your candlesticks, then pop them in the freezer for a few minutes. The wax will easily be removed when you take them back out. Then you can wash them. Letting hot water flow over the wax on the candlesticks also works well. If you need to get wax out of your tablecloth, try using an ice cube over it to harden the wax and then attempt to lift or scrape it off. Another trick is to place a paper towel or paper bag over the stain and use an iron on a low setting to lift the stain. Simply iron the paper towel or bag until the wax begins to appear. Change out the towel or bag as often as needed until all of the wax has been absorbed. Finally, don’t forget your fireplace! Cleaning and sweeping the fireplace makes the room dust free and tidy when your guests arrive. Be sure to keep some club soda on hand for clothing stains—it works great. If you find it hard to clean the house alone and with your busy schedule, it is recommended that you hire professional house cleaners to get the job done.
